On the 30th May 2009 myself, my brother David and our father headed off on our Scotland motorcycle tour covering 2000 miles (approx) of road over 8 days. The bikes were a Kawasaki ER-6F, GPZ-400 and a Honda Hornet.
The 4th day in and the weather began to turn a little cooler. Originally forcast for
rain we our fortune continued and we ended up with another dry day.
The original plan was for us to head north form Ullapool towards Cape Wrath and
then head back along the very top of Scotland past Smoo Caves towards Tongue.
We decided however that since we seemed to be making better progress each day
that we originally planned that we would also head on towards John O Groats if we had the time.
So we heaed off towards Cape Wrath only to find that the tide was out and we could not get across. A
brief stop at Smoo Caves (ed:- such a cool word) we continued towards Tongue. There wree two bikers on
K series BMWs that we kept passing the whole day which was rather amusing to me. As we arrived at
the Kyle of Tongue we decided to head on towards John O Groat arriving as the weather had cleared.
A stop for a burger, a drink, and a quick chat with some fellow bikers was followed by us turning around
and heading back towards Tongue with a stop off for some fuel.
The B&B in Tongue was on a farm outside of the town, so we had about a 15 minute walk back to town to get some dinner. If
you've not been to Tongue (and I expect you haven't) its a tiny place. Not as small as the townships in New
Zealand but its not far off. There is one shop that we saw, a pub, a hotel a police station and some houses. There is a
Youth Hostel somewhere as well as we were asked for directions to it by a cyclist. Heh, as if we had an idea. It must be pointed out that
those with mobiles may struggle to get a network connection here.
